Hailing from Northwestern Pennsylvania, instrumental quartet Heron arrive like a rush of fresh mountain air on the post rock scene with You Are Here Now, a magnificent debut album bursting with melodic invention, infectious energy, and arrangements that demonstrate meticulous attention to space, tone, and texture.
The band really makes the most of their four piece format which allows enough room for each musician’s contribution to stand out but has enough power to swell into exhilarating wall of sound moments. Particular highlights here is a trio of transcendent mini-epics in the form of “Shores”, “Drop”, and “Before the War” along with a nicely crafted ambient interlude delivered by the title track. This is big, beautiful, uplifting stuff made to be listened to loud and often.
You Are Here Now is available in a variety of digital formats as well as limited run of hand-packaged CDs (100 copies). Post rock fans might like to know the album was mixed by Matt Bayles who has also done work with Minus the Bear, Caspian, and Russian Circles.
