Exploring creative ways of integrating ambient sounds with modern composition is a focus for Josh Alexander, a classically trained composer and musician based in Bristol (UK) who is set to release the follow up to his 2018 debut ‘Hiraeth‘ on Moderna Records. Bright Morning Jetlag Blues offers up six polished neoclassical gems featuring piano recorded in the assembly hall of an old school in Bristol subsequently ornamented with analogue synths & modular-processed piano and cello parts performed and recorded by Florence Fawcett in her bedroom during lockdown.
Alexander deftly intertwines atmospheric vignettes of contemplative beauty with lilting waltzes in a way that presents more like a suite than a collection of individual songs. The brevity of the album is actually to its advantage. Like a well-written novella, it is concise, yet eloquent and able to achieve a sense of immersion in a compact space.
