Video Premiere: Ivo by Matti Bye

From a very young age, Swedish composer Matti Bye came to the realization that the piano would be the instrument that would become what is biography calls his “true means of expression” and “musical weapon of choice”. His career provides ample evidence of this from his live performances to screenings of the masterpieces of silent film to his own solo works, collaborations, and award-winning film scores.

Completing a trilogy of albums which began in 2020 with which began with Bethanien and This Forgotten Land, Matti is set to release a new album of original works next month entitled Capri Clouds. With support from Anders af Klintberg (bass, synths, and cello) and Dennis Egbert (drums and percussion), he takes his listeners on a filmic journey steeped in melancholia, nostalgia. It is evocative late-night music in a dreamily noirish mood, a haunted narrative fraught with emotion. In the words of Swedish poet Ulrika Revenäs Strollo it is “music to lean into, meditatively, and hopefully longing”.

We have the sound of the wind with us and the sound of the sea below us as we fly, and above we hear the stars and planets spinning. A piano from the past, as if Satie met space…These songs go straight to the heart and to the senses, and create images in your head. Stories from your own memory bank, as well as new visions – music to lean into, meditatively and hopefully longing.
